“Music often sounds simple and easy to learn, but it is quite difficult and takes a large amount of
dedicated practice, and much of it can be really boring, especially for drums. However, this is
where I excel – making the ‘boring’ practice fun and exciting. Because my teaching goal is not just
to help students learn songs, but also to help them surpass their limitations and reach greater
heights. And when they’ve reach those heights, they can brag about how much work they put in,
because they’ve earned the right. And I’ve only helped them just a teeny weeny bit. *laugh*”
Adrian Wong has played drums for more than 15 years. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree, and
before working in Music Education Centre, he taught drums as a private practice.
As a drum teacher, Adrian uses his vast knowledge and personal experience to help different
students develop fine motor skills that not only improve their drumming, but also other
coordination-related activities such as sports. Moreover, he is fond of using funny analogies and
examples to help students better understand musical concepts and practice disciplines.
Adrian learned piano and guitar when he was young, but his reading skill was poor and he was often
ridiculed by his teachers. So, he quit music for a long time, and only started learning drums when he
thought he could learn by ear. Over time, he realised his mistake – but he also learned that there is a
method to reading music. So, as he spent countless hours mastering this method to eliminate his
weakness; he also challenged himself to learn different music styles, resulting in his current flexibility
in all styles. His favourite music genres are funk, jazz and fusion.
Other than drums, Adrian plays bass as a hobby, and occasionally studies music theory. Outside of
music, he enjoys studying history, human anatomy – both which contribute to
his drum teaching skill.
