Jonna Arthur has been a valued member of the Music Education Centre's team for over 15 years. Trained at the Royal College of Music (London) Jonna moved to New Zealand teaching firstly in the Hawkes Bay, and then moving to Auckland. She played in the Auckland Philharmonia for 15 years and now dedicates her time to teaching, while still exploring her passion as an experienced Chamber Musician, peforming regularly in small group in New Zealand and overseas
She describes watching students perform the pieces they have practised in class as the most rewarding aspect of teaching. "When you have a student concert and you hear the children playing together in groups, it's absolutely amazing," she says.
She believes music can help create a balance in people's lives and be used as a tool to ease the mind from other distractions. "To be able to do something creative I believe helps the brain," she says. "A lesson can often consist of a lot of talking and not a lot of playing. It all depends on the child's needs at that particular moment."
Jonna's passion for music began at a very early age. "The first time I heard a violin was on the radio accompanied by an orchestra," she says. "I just had a gut feeling it was what I wanted."
Outside of teaching Jonna has enjoyed performing chamber music and playing in a professional orchestra. Despite this thought she still remains committed to teaching.
"I just want everyone who plays the violin to listen to themselves and strive to make the most beautiful sound possible."
