Personal Profile
Richard originally studied with Frank Gibson Jnr (one of N.Z.s top jazz drummers) and Billy Nuku (Maori Volcanics, John Rowles) but most of his musical education has been ‘on the job’. He has been playing drum-kit at a professional level for over 40 years in a wide range of styles (rock, pop, blues, ska/reggae, jazz, Latin) from Hokitika to Whangarei, but mostly in Auckland. Richard has also studied and performed West African, Brazilian, and Cook Island drumming.

“Highlights of my playing career have been performances at Sweetwaters, WOMAD, Wellington Percussive Arts Festivals, New Year’s Eve in Aotea Square, and great nights at some of the legendary Rock pubs around Auckland…..Also got to play on Shane’s Rockin’ The Planet on FACE TV with the band ROUNDhouse (Show 19 if you want to check it out on YouTube).”

“I have been a drum tutor since 2005. Prior to that I ran my own business as a tax accountant but decided to spend the rest of my time following my passion in life, which is playing and teaching percussion music.”

“My aim in teaching is to produce well-rounded MUSICAL drummers capable of performing in a variety of bands. As part of the process, I teach how to read and write drum notation, but I also use a Drum Language and a grid system of reading/writing which can greatly help those finding difficulty with conventional methods of learning. My motto always is: ‘If you haven’t learned, then I haven’t taught’. I can always find another way to explain something which is causing difficulty.”
