Shaun Malyon is one of the Music Education Centre’s specialist drum teachers, with 12 years of teaching experience to his name. He describes watching students improve and develop a passion for the drums as his main motivation for teaching.
“One of the greatest rewards of the job is when students progress and start to develop music as a serious passion and hobby,” he says. Shaun believes that music is a great form of expression that also has countless other benefits. “It helps with coordination a huge amount and also with developing good memory,” he says. ”The number one reason to do it though is just cause it’s enjoyable, which should always be the underlying reason I think.”
Shaun first became interested in the drums at intermediate school, where he would watch drummers perform during the singing assemblies. “I wasn’t a big fan of doing the singing, but I liked watching the drumming” he says. “I’d just go in there and watch them play.”
As a teacher he is open to wide range of genres from progressive metal to jazz. “I like to encourage students in every way,” he says. “If they want to go down a certain musical direction, I will do my best to do that but still expose them to other genres.”
